Year in Preview
With the beginning of any new year come a series of reflections on how we as individuals and groups can be better, do better, and fulfill our goals. Vista is no different. As we look forward to this upcoming year there are things Vista would like to continue and others we would like to alter and/or improve upon.
Our mission remains the same, namely, to be a platform for student voices to be heard. Whether this is through our Commentary, Religion, or Arts & Culture sections we want to be the online and print space where North Park students can express their views.
A few things to take note of: first, here at Vista we feel that "Literary Arts" has been too narrow a term for what we intend to accomplish with our section. We've decided to alter the section's name to Arts & Culture to collectively refer to other areas of the arts and humanities that bond people, especially our student body. Sitting in your dorm room to binge on a new season of Black Mirror is just as much a form of art consumption as it is to check out a new Magritte installation at the Art Institute. Also, keep an eye out for Vista’s monthly music playlist that will be posted to the website. Yes, we like music too!
Second, our Commentary section will be engaging in back and forth dialogue between students on particular issues (e.g. Trump tax cuts, DACA, upcoming elections). Our hope is that through thoughtful debate between opposing political and social ideologies we will emulate the kind of public dialogue that is so desperately needed in our country and world.
Third, the Religion section will be taking on a greater Christian character. Students will contribute devotions, theological essays, and personal faith stories that we hope will enrich the spiritual life of our university.
As a new publication our vision is clear. It’s the nitty and gritty of carrying out that vision that often proves difficult. It’s our hope that you, the reader, would continue on this journey with us. Help us out by sharing posts you enjoy, recommending us to friends, or by contributing a piece to one of our sections. We are open to your thoughts and opinions and look forward to what lies ahead. We encourage you to leave feedback on our latest magazine issue to let us know what kind of content you would like to see more of this year.
